The 2016 Scottish Grand National

Continued . . .

The Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase (G3) at Ayers Racecourse is a grueling 4-mile race over 27 fences. On April 16, 2016, 28 horses started the race but only 10 finished; 14 were pulled up; 1 was brought down by a rival; 1 unseated his rider; and 2 fell.

The 11-year-old gelding Golden Chieftain (IRE) (a one-time Cheltenham Festival winner) had his share of falls (5) in a 7-year, primarily jumping career, including in each of his last 2 races, at Uttoxeter and Exeter. But, at the Scottish Grand National (his 43rd start) he broke down and was pulled up before the last fence and was euthanized.
